Severstal NA turns to Woodings for key equipment.
WOODINGS WILL DELIVER GUNS, DRILLS AND VALVES FOR “B” FURNACE UPGRADE

MARS, PA--The operation of a blast furnace is only as good as its systems and equipment.  With that in mind, Woodings Industrial is confident that the soon to be upgraded “B” blast furnace at Severstal NA Dearborn facility will be a very good system indeed.  Woodings has been selected to provide the steelmaker with variety of equipment for the recently announced furnace upgrade.

Woodings has already begun initial engineering work on a hydraulic taphole gun and drill, hot blast valves and double block and bleed valves.

The Woodings all hydraulic drill will be built with a single, common housing.  This design allows for just two hydraulic hoses instead of four which reduces maintenance time and potential damage. The drills also have only one set of controls so operation is much simpler and operator errors are greatly reduced.  Because the drill has only one housing, it is significantly smaller, more compact than traditional drills and can be used in much smaller spaces.  Also unique is the option of having fully automated controls which provide spot-on predictability and repeatability. Taphole length is accurately monitored and recorded.  This will be the first installation of the innovative drill for Severstal NA.

In addition to the drifter, Severstal NA has also asked Woodings to provide four (4) sets of double block and bleed valves. These valves are 30” lever type valves with one acting as gas safety shutoff valve and the other acting as shutoff valve with 8” vent valve in between the two valves.

Woodings will also be manufacturing and delivering four (4) hot blast valves.  Designed by Woodings, the hot blast valves will be fully water cooled with high velocity water passage which minimizes settlement of material from cooling water. These valves are
42” mushroom type valves with hydraulic cylinder operators. Hydraulic valves are proportional controlled for slowdown prior to closing mushroom into seat.
“Designing and developing equipment that helps producers go to the next level in terms of productivity, reliability and efficiency is what we wake up thinking about each day”, stated Rob Woodings, president. “Being able to deliver on that challenge is our goal.”
