Woodings Delivers First Battery Powered Tuyere Carts THEY KEEP GOING AND GOING AND….
(Mars, PA)---With the introduction of a battery-powered tuyere cart, Woodings Industrial has yet again created another “first” for the metal making machinery industry.
At the request of Severstal Sparrows Point, Woodings designed and built the battery powered tuyere cart for the steelmaker’s blast furnace facility. Severstal needed the carts to move blowpipe assemblies but wanted to eliminate the long hoses of traditionally air over hydraulic-driven carts, so they asked Woodings to come up with a better idea.
Woodings took up the challenge and began consulting with major manufacturers of low voltage motors and batteries in an effort to find a workable way to apply parallel technology to power the heavy duty tuyere carts.
The result is a strong, reliable tuyere cart that can be easily operated without the need for pneumatics and the accompanying cumbersome hoses. The battery-powered tuyere cart is driven by a 60 volt DC motor that drives a hydraulic pump that powers all the cart’s motions. A set of five batteries are included on the cart. Battery charger is included in order to recharge the batteries after each use. Battery life is calculated based on 16 hour down day prior to needing recharging.
“Applying innovative thinking is something we like to do for all of our customers but this challenge was way outside the box. It was exciting and gratifying to be able to respond to Severstal’s request with an equipment innovation that answers the need for convenience, efficiency and reliability,” stated Woodings President, Rob Woodings.
