WOODINGS INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION COMPLETES VENTURI SCRUBBERS FOR ALABAMA STEEL MAKER AND ROUGE STEEL

MARS, Pa. (April 6, 2004)

Woodings Industrial Corporation, a worldwide leader in the manufacture of metals industry equipment, recently completed Venturi scrubber projects for a major steel manufacturer in Alabama and for Rouge Steel in Dearborn, Mich.

Woodings designed and manufactured three new scrubbers for the Alabama facility. The scrubbers, a damper-type design with water injection for cooling, now utilize split bearings that facilitate maintenance and reduce downtime because parts are more easily accessible. Also, as part of its new design, Woodings used Grabe overlay wear plates to extend the life of the scrubbers, and made improvements to the stuffing box and packing design that allow easier access to components, while providing better lubrication and longer part life. Woodings' redesigned pillow blocks also reduce and simplify maintenance.

"We needed to replace the scrubber throats and also wanted to extend their life expectancy," said Jimmy Johnson, Area Manager of Maintenance. "Typically they've had a one-year life expectancy, but we worked with Woodings to extend the scrubbers' life and hope to get one-and-a-half to two years out of them, "Johnson continued. "Woodings has a great engineering department and really understood what we needed."

"Our customer needed a longer-lasting scrubber, so we developed a design using Grabe overlay wear plates – which are better than any type of plate on the market," said Al Colucci, General Manager of Engineering at Woodings. "The newly designed scrubbers will not only last longer, they'll also be easier to maintain."
Grabe utilizes technology that allows the wear plate to be welded flat and then applied to the unit, resulting in better weld penetration and greater weld reliability. Woodings is the exclusive supplier of the abrasion-resistant Grabe weld overlay components in the United States.

Woodings reconditioned a similar, damper-type style Venturi scrubber for Rouge Steel, incorporating design improvements. These improvements included changes to refractory design and piping design.

Both projects were completed at Woodings' Harmony plant.
